Gerupuk surf guide: one bay, different waves

Gerupuk is a collection of surf breaks, not one interchangeable wave. When planning a session, ask which part of the bay is being considered and why it suits your surfing.

Inside and outside are different decisions

Inside Gerupuk is known for a right-hand reef wave used for progression. Farther outside the bay, waves can be significantly more demanding. Surfline describes the outside right as much more powerful than the inside reform. Being comfortable at one Gerupuk break does not mean you are ready for all of them.

Wave direction and seasonal wind

For Inside Gerupuk, a local operator lists south to southwest swell and west to northwest wind as favorable. The wet-season wind pattern can suit this break; dry-season sessions can still work, particularly before stronger trades develop. Conditions must be checked on the day rather than inferred from the season alone.

A left or a right?

A right peels to the surfer’s right when riding toward shore; a left goes the opposite way. That is different from the compass direction of the swell. Tell Adel whether you are practising one direction, but keep ability and crowd awareness ahead of selecting a wave purely for your stance.

What to tell Adel before heading out

Explain whether you have surfed a reef break before and whether you can paddle, choose waves and manage your board independently. Ask him to discuss the chosen break and access arrangements. A productive session might be about positioning and catching a few controlled waves rather than moving immediately to a more exposed peak.

General planning guidance, not a live surf report. Confirm the break and conditions locally before entering the water.
